Explainability and Rhetoric in Medical AI
Studies transparency and ethics in healthcare AI applications including diagnosis, treatment recommendation, and patient communication. Addresses fairness, bias, and communication challenges in medical AI, with particular attention to vulnerable patient populations.
As AI systems become embedded in clinical decision-making, questions of transparency and accountability become urgent. This project examines how medical AI systems communicate their reasoning to clinicians and patients, and what rhetorical and ethical standards such communication should meet.
The research draws on bioethics, rhetoric of science, and AI ethics to develop criteria for trustworthy and equitable AI in healthcare settings, with a focus on populations historically underserved by medical institutions.
