CHaT at the Summer Language Institute

June 9, 2026  · University of Cincinnati

As part of the CEDAR Language Resource Center's 2026 Summer Language Institute, Dr. Andrew Cullison will lead an interactive workshop on Ethical Pedagogy in the Age of AI.

The UC Center for Humanities and Technology is collaborating with the CEDAR Language Resource Center for the 2026 Summer Language Institute, a two-day, in-person institute hosted at the University of Cincinnati for K-16 language practitioners.

The Summer Language Institute supports K-16 language practitioners seeking to employ contemporary, research-supported best practices for world language instruction in their classrooms. Specifically, the Summer Language Institute will focus on equipping pre- and in-service foreign/world language, heritage language, immersion, and ESL/EFL educators with training on how to both modify existing curricula and create new course materials that adhere to ACTFL World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages.

A description of Dr. Cullison’s workshop is below:

AI is transforming education, but not always in ways that align with how pedagogical decisions should be made. While institutions rush to adopt AI tools, ethical reflection and thoughtful student preparation often lag behind. This interactive session invites participants into a live dialogue on two critical questions: What skills do students need to thrive in an increasingly AI-laden world, and how should we as educators decide what responsible AI integration looks like in our classrooms?

Blending insights from ethics education and learning design, the session explores tensions between innovation, academic integrity, and human judgment. Participants will work through real-world classroom scenarios, from assessment and assignment design to student use of generative tools, contribute their own perspectives, and evaluate AI-related pedagogical decisions in practice.

The session emphasizes that ethical pedagogy is not a checklist or policy document, but a capability that must be cultivated alongside technical adoption.
